Marina Botafoch, near Ibiza
Closed - Opens on Friday 24 May 2019
Zela, situated close to Marina Botafoch, is considered to be a pioneer in what is termed “Meppon” cuisine, which transforms traditional Mediterranean produce with Japanese cooking techniques.
Sited in the area around Talamanca, Zela is in a prime Ibiza position, close to top clubs like Pacha or Lío and the upmarket area of Marina Botafoch.
Named after a rare butterfly from Indochina, the restaurant takes Japanese specialities and recipes from neighbouring Asian countries, Ibiza, Spain and Latin America to create a highly individual fusion of food offering.
This means a menu that includes sushi, temaki, dim sum and ceviche with highlights such as butterfish with white truffle, or the Catalan-inspired beef “usuzukuri” with bread and tomato (pa amb tomàquet) with beef alongside more traditional tatakis and gyozas and a spectacular tartar of toro, the most-prized part of the tuna.
The supreme flavour of Waygu beef features strongly on the menu and caviar gets its own menu section with specialities like beef tartar or marrow, both with 10 grams each of caviar. A taste of Ibiza comes with scallops and sobrasada plus there are Latin American “tiraditos” and dishes inspired by Hawaii and Thailand.
Vegans and vegetarians are catered for and will find a variety of exquisite dishes on the menu.
Zela features a cocktail bar making some of the most inventive and delicious cocktails around; a sushi bar; three private dining spaces; two gorgeous outside terraces; a secret garden and a dj booth.
Decor is inspired by a melange of Asian and Spanish colonial design with exquisite hand-painted tiles adorning the walls and the bar, plus there are tinges of gold and forest green.
The restaurant is open until 03:00 so diners can enjoy late dinners with live music performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays featuring local and Spanish DJs and singers with percussion, modern swing , urban rhythm and ‘80s and ‘90s sounds.
Zela was founded by local businessmen Abel Matutes Prats and Manuel Campos Guallar and is also backed by celebrities including Enrique Iglesias, Rafael Nadal, Cristiano Ronaldo and the basketball player Pau Gasol.
